However, the wind change chit shoud be ruled out and only applied at turn end.Company of Heroes 2 is a tactical-heavy World War II real-time strategy PC game that focuses on unit-based tactics in battles in the Eastern Front theater. Have increased my rating after some thought, the game simply gets an A for effort.

Vae Victis magazine is generally a good example of how to do it right. As a result I did what looked OK and then found that the labeling on the sheet is actually incorrect and I had to do half the counters over again. Overall, a not very simple design that would work OK but the chitpull makes it bizarre.Ī hint to the designer: if you mix single-sided and double-sided counters on one sheet, please make sure the separation is made clear on the sheet, in particular if the same row of counters includes some that are single sided and some that are double sided. It also seems that the wind changes pretty much every turn by dieroll, but this needs to be inferred.

In fact the rules use the term that chits are selected rather than pulled randomly from a container, but I assume that is just a language issue. It seems that all chits are pulled every turn but this is never stated. on the record sheets, until I realised that the second part of that rule is essentially only a design note and not a description of how to compute combat strengths. The boarding combat rule had me looking desperately for the distinction between Marines etc. The rules quality was generally OK but a few rules were difficult to decipher. That feels right for divisions or corps on land, but not for ships. What's worse, the wind also changes in mid-turn (every turn), which means that depending on the order in which chits are pulled the first and third of the squadrons in your line may have moved but then the second and fourth will suddenly be blocked and have to row.

Here, as in War Galley, the chits will open major gaps unless fleets creep about hex by hex. (It should be noted that in general, I am a great fan of chitpull systems.) Even if inferior fleets, maneuvering unwisely, happened to open gaps in their line, they generally had to be levered open by aggressively attacking the ships nearby or the opportunity would be lost. In play, I was struck again by the observation I made with GMT's War Galley long ago: chitpull systems are not suited to modeling naval battles, as they prevent the first tactic that any fleet worked on: moving in line. The rules are a bit fiddly, and it covers only half the battle. Given its drama and significance, one would expect Lepanto to get more coverage by wargame designers, and it's good to see one giving it the attention it deserves. NOTE: Where I have included quotes from BGG users, I have included the BGG user name in parentheses.Ī graphically beautiful game on a rarely covered topic that clearly belongs in the "labor of love" category. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually most if not all of them. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly.

Feel free to this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. These are games that meet substantially all of the following criteria: (1) naval based wargame (2) focuses on naval actions pre-1571 (3) addresses the "theme" in an interesting or compelling manner that leaves the player with a better understanding of naval engagements during this period (and its various aspects) and (4) fun to play (understanding that this can be very subjective, especially for wargames). Below is my Top 10 list of games covering naval warfare prior to the Age of Sail, roughly pre-1571.
